Prescription Drug Addiction
Prescription drugs have become the latest phase of drug addiction. There are several reasons for this. The availability of prescription drugs and the direct advertising to consumers plays a role. A survey done by the National Institute on drug abuse reports that 48 million people-about 20 percent of the U.S. population-aged 12 or older had used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in their lifetimes.
The following prescription drugs are the most commonly abused currently:
Opioids— drugs that are usually prescribed to treat pain. Drugs such as oxycodone, morphine, codeine, Demerol, Vicoden and even Oxy Contin fall into this category.
CNS depressants— drugs used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. The two most commonly abused drugs in this category are benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium and sleeping aids such as Ambien and Lunesta.
Stimulants— drugs used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. These drugs include those such as Ritalin and Adderall as well as Dexedrine.
In states such as Florida, legislators were slow to act on passing legislation to put into place a Prescription Drug Monitoring program making it possible for drug dealers and drug traffickers to have "patients" go from pain clinic to pain clinic and pretending illnesses, sometimes even with false MRIs and obtain pain pills. These type of clinics are called "Pill Mills" and a recent Grand Jury investigation in Broward County, FL revealed this pattern behind the skyrocketing growth in pain clinics in South Florida going from just 4 in 2007 to 115 by 2009. The 50 highest prescribing doctors of Oxycodone in the US are all prescribing doctors in Florida.
The result is prescription pain killers such as Oxycodone are easier to obtain than ever. As well, pain pills are notorious for being highly addictive substances. As tolerance builds the patient requires more and more of the same drug to produce similar effects.
