Narconon – The Solution for our Drugged Culture

Drugs have become a part of our everyday world. You'd be hard pressed to turn on a TV station and not see some sort of medicine or drug ad, especially on the prime time stations. Drug ads pop-up when one opens ones email, logs onto a web site or one can find them flipping through any popular magazine. Just type in "teens" in your Google search bar and "teens and drugs" is the first suggested search. The appearance of drugs in society has become commonplace. This is so much the case that, prescription drug overdoses have become an American epidemic according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

According to the CDC, and the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than 5 million Americans misused prescription painkillers in the past month. Since 1990 there are more than five times the deaths from prescription drug overdoses. The CDC states, "Prescription drugs are now involved in more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined."

Despite the ever increasing warning signs of a drugged America, drugs keep flooding into the culture. Not only do we still have heavy trafficking of illegal drugs, but also the abuse of prescription drugs poses a deadly problem for our current and future generations.

Public Awareness of the Drug Problem is Increasing

However, the word does seem to be getting out. According to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, a recent survey by the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health shows that U.S. adults now rate drug abuse as the top health concern for children and worry more about children using drugs than obesity or smoking.

This is a step in the right direction. Parents are becoming concerned, as well they should be. The most recent data from The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, shows the percent of young adults age 18–20 abusing drugs has increased. In fact, every age of person surveyed shows an increase in drug use. More startling is the fact that the percentage of college students using drugs matches the overall drug use for the age bracket and it too has increased. Higher education alone does not deter drug use.

Illicit drugs and marijuana top the list among drugs of abuse. Although it is often believed marijuana is a "mild drug" nothing could be further from the truth. Marijuana of 1974 is not the same marijuana of 2011. In fact, growers of marijuana have developed more potent strains of the drug 10 to 24 times that of previous years. This means more of the toxin THC is going into our nation's youth with resultant more drug damage mentally and socially. Marijuana is also a gateway drug for other drugs, making the marijuana problem that much worse.

The Solution to the Drug Problem

The gains in public awareness of our nation's drug problem could be wasted unless proper drug education and drug rehabilitation are made widespread and known. Drug education is a vital deterrent to drug abuse and it should be followed-up with at home and could even mean some lifestyle changes for some. Narconon delivers drug education and provides even the answers of how to talk to kids about drugs or anyone for that matter. Narconon even offers self-help guides on how to get off of drugs and provides help for someone on illicit drugs.

Due to the fact that over one-fifth of our youth today are taking drugs, drug education only goes so far. By the time a teenager or college student has tried his third or fourth drug, they are well on their way to addiction. The only answer for the addicted is a successful drug rehabilitation program that doesn't substitute the addict's drug of choice for some other prescription drug. Narconon is completely drug-free and has proven itself over 45 years to be the most successful in this line, with a success rate four times that of the international average.

Everyone Plays a Roll

Drug abuse is not an isolated event in our nation at this time. A single abuser costs all of us a great deal in terms of taxes, increases law enforcement, increased judicial costs as well as the direct threat in terms of damage, stolen goods and the like. Drugs link to crime as drugs lower the personal threshold of individuals of what they will and won't tolerate. When drug cravings become intense, an addict will take any action they now deem necessary to obtain more drugs. Drugs to the addicted become an obsession and crime is of no consequence. Thus drug abuse by an individual affects us all.

If it were a single user the solution of "send them to jail" might serve. However, when it comprises a fifth of our youth and overall 21.8 million users, and with ten and a half million people driving under the influence of illicit drugs, and that 53% of Federal inmates are serving time for drug offenses, it becomes apparent that drug abuse affects all our lives.
