Narconon- The Answer to Drug Addiction

hand with pills

September 2011 was proclaimed as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, by President Obama in recognition of the millions of Americans addicted to drugs and alcohol. As the President states and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirm, prescription drug addition has become an epidemic. This is in addition to the enormous influx of illegal drugs distributed and sold in the States annually. Although the proclamation is a positive step in raising awareness of the issue of drug addiction, it gives a sobering view of our nation's newest troubles.

There are numerous drug addition and recovery centers throughout the United States. Among them there are at least four prominent schools of thought concerning addiction, as covered in other articles on this site. From each of these schools of thought branches out numerous variations of a theme and methods of approach.

Addiction as a Disease

desease

The "disease concept" of addiction is quite popular currently among medical facilities. This method of approach to handling addiction is to give the addict a drug that is considered less harmful than the drug the addict is addicted to. It also is believed that addiction is an inherited disease and as such the individual is permanently ill and can therefore only be treated with drugs.

Although this may work well in laboratory theory, working with actual drug addicts soon proves it to be quite unworkable. For one, most addicts reaching for addiction help, although they may have succumbed almost entirely to drugs, generally still seem to possess an internal knowingness that it would be better if they were off of drugs then on them. Also with many, the genetics simply don't line up. They come from a successful family with no history of addiction and the addict's problem is a new one to the family leaving them adrift in how to handle it. This then doesn't explain their addiction.

Now it may work initially to convince them they are better on a drug than not and their condition is irremediable due to some ancestor's problem, however, this eventually breaks down, as internally they know the drugs are just an additive to their lives and that this is just an excuse like many others they have used to justify their continued addiction.

However, even if one is still convinced that one becomes an addict because of a disease they inherited, or bad genetics, the idea that one will always be an addict falls apart utterly when one sees the thousands of Narconon graduates having gone through the drug-free Narconon program and have successfully remained off drugs over the last 45 years of Narconon's existence. Further proof is in the addicts that have gone through several other drug rehabs only to finally succeed at Narconon in coming off of drugs for good.

Who Benefits?

The idea that addiction is a disease is just a theory. There is scientific evidence for and against this theory. There are many other theories as well. However it is the theory most used by the medical and pharmaceutical drug industry in explaining and treating addiction.

The facts are the nation is in the middle of a prescription drug epidemic as stated by the President and declared by the CDC. If prescription drug addiction is also being treated with prescription drugs, it wouldn't be so far a field to pose the question, "Do pharmaceutical companies benefit from all these prescription drug treatments and theories on drug addiction?"

If one is in the mindset that drugs are the answer to life's difficulties, then this would be the avenue to approach when seeking a drug rehab. There is, however, a successful non-drug program in use for over 44 years effectively rehabilitating people from drug addiction, without the idea that drugs are needed to get one off drugs.

The Narconon program is entirely drug-free and gives the student the necessary skills and increased abilities to overcome their addiction. By eliminating cravings through the New Life Detoxification program and improving communication and life skills, the student is far more able to live a drug-free life.

Is There a Need for Drugs in Drug Rehab?

Usually the only time drugs are needed in drug rehabilitation is in the early stages of withdrawal and only for certain types of drugs. This is most often done when a medical doctor needs to wean the person down from high dosages, to avoid life threatening consequences. Certain pharmaceutical drugs when ceased abruptly will cause serious reactions or seizures. Thus a medical doctor is needed to reduce the dosages in these circumstances. However, this is a wean down, not exchanging one drug for another. In a few days of wean down the person will be off the drugs and can then, with medical approval, do the full Narconon program to reap the benefits of full drug detoxification and gain the knowledge and skills to live a drug-free life.

Most addictions, however, need no such wean down. In fact, success rates show clearly that the non-drug approach of Narconon is far more successful than other methods. In fact, Narconon's non-drug approach is four times more successful than the international average for other methods of drug rehab.

The Answer

There is no real reason to continue an addict's addiction by having him report in for the rest of his or her life for their prescription. There are thousands upon thousands of successful graduates of the Narconon program that are an attestation each day that living a drug-free life is possible.

As one parent put it, "My wife and I are so grateful to the job that the superb people at Narconon Suncoast Rehabilitation Center have done. They have turned around an absolutely destroyed young lady and made a wonderful young woman of her with their structured and tough approach to getting off the junk. Without Narconon Suncoast, my wife and I would surely have been attending a funeral for our daughter, but because of them and their program, we will hopefully someday be attending her wedding. May God Bless and keep you all at Narconon." -D.S.
