Heroin Addiction
According to a study done by the National Survey on Drug Use and health, 379,000 United States residents, over the age of 12 used heroin with 108,000 users that year. This was in 2005.
Heroin is used by smoking, inhalation (snorting), injecting and oral ingestion. Inhalation of the drug increased during the 1990’s but many user who start inhaling the drug, soon progress to injecting it. Those who inject heroin are at high risk because of the spread of disease through shared needles.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that 3.7 million people have used heroin at some time in their lives and 119,000 people used the drug within a month after the survey was done.
The number of people needing heroin rehab has also increased. In the 90’s the average number of people needing rehab for a heroin addiction was 228,000 and this number rose to 254,000 in 2005. During this time, 94% of those addicted to heroin were using the drug through inhalation and injection.
