Drinking and Driving - Death and Near Death Experiences

It seems that drinking alcohol while driving in a car or driving with someone who is drunk are common experiences in many people's lives in the western world, and the US is a leader in this deadly activity.

Maybe it is carelessness, or stupidity or a suicidal impulse, but it happens over 2,500 times a DAY in the US alone - that is the average daily number of drunk driving (or DUI - Driving under the Influence) arrests that occur, according to the statistics given on the site www.drinkinganddriving.org . And fully 1/3rd of those arrested are repeat offenders! If there are over 2,500 drunk driver ARRESTS per day, then how many people in total are actually driving drunk and NOT being arrested?? There are nearly 12,000 fatalities per year in the US from drunk driving. The leading states for these fatalities are Nevada, with 40 deaths per 100,000 people, Montana with 44 deaths per 100,000 people, and Texas with 26 deaths per 100,000 people.

The total of alcohol-related deaths in the US is very high - according to the US Centers for Disease Control, "There are approximately 79,000 deaths attributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States. This makes excessive alcohol use the 3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for the nation. Additionally, excessive alcohol use is responsible for 2.3 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) annually, or an average of about 30 years of potential life lost for each death. In the single year 2005, there were more than 1.6 million hospitalizations and more than 4 million emergency room visits for alcohol-related conditions."

One remedy that is reported as improving this massive problem is Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices , according to Illinois state officials, as reported recently at ChicagoNews.net "The state's law for "Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices," or "BAIIDS," took effect in January 2009. Every first-time DUI offender who wants to continue driving must install a "BAIID" on his or her vehicle and blow into it to measure the blood alcohol content. Wednesday, Secretary of State Jesse White, "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" and other officials announced, since the law's passage, the number of "BAIIDS" in Illinois quadrupled to 12,000 a year, rearrest rates for drunk drivers dropped 67 percent, and alcohol-related crash deaths dropped 5 percent. White says he has now initiated a new law to streamline the BAIID program."

How to never get arrested for DUI and never be a party to the death of another through alcohol abuse?

The simple answer to this question is that one would not use or abuse alcohol, and never drive while impaired by alcohol. But for many people, this is much easier said than done. According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 17.6 million adults in the United States are alcoholics or have alcohol problems. This is over 7% of our adult population. What is the solution for those troubled with drinking problems? What lifestyle changes can be made to eliminate the deadly habit of alcohol abuse?

Narconon ® has a solution that has been successfully used by people afflicted with drug and alcohol addiction since 1966. The Narconon Drug Rehabilitation program has helped thousands of people turn their lives around and live free from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The Narconon program is different from other programs in that those who do the program are students, and they use educational methods to end their addictions and any predisposition to future addictive behaviors. They discover the causes for their anti-social, anti-life and anti-self activities, they resolve the underlying issues, and can then move forward with a New Life. The program begins with the Narconon drug-free withdrawal, followed by a communication skills course, and New Life Detoxification Program and continues with educational studies to give the student the tools they need to remain drug and alcohol free for the rest of their live.

Because sudden cessation of drinking by an alcoholic can bring about dangerous withdrawal symptoms, Narconon uses effective alcohol withdrawal techniques. Over 40 years ago when Narconon first started giving vitamins to withdrawing alcoholics, traditional rehabilitation programs said that was not necessary. Now vitamin supplements, especially the B-Vitamins that Narconon has been using for over 40 years, have become the staple for Emergency Room "Banana Bags" commonly given to stabilize alcohol addicts in Emergency Rooms across the U.S. (Banana Bag - an intravenous (IV) fluid pack that has B-vitamins, minerals and other nutrients - the B-vitamins give the fluid a yellow color, hence the slang name, "banana bag.")

At Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Centers, we have found that that it is possible to recover from alcohol addiction, just like recovery is possible from any other drug. To accomplish this, we use a holistic method of drug rehabilitation that treats the entire person, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually, not just the areas that are acutely affected by dependence. With this comprehensive approach, we are able to help our clients identify and handle the root causes that led to their substance abuse problems in the first place. Finding the real reasons that the addict started using alcohol in the first place allows them to begin gaining the skills they need to lead sober and fulfilling lives. The addict soon realizes that they can be in control of their lives without having to escape into compulsive and destructive behaviors like addiction.

The Narconon program is a long-term inpatient drug and alcohol treatment center. Our students move through treatment phases only when they have achieved all of the goals laid out. For more information on recovery from any type of addiction, contact Narconon today. We have certified Addiction Specialists standing by to help.
